Lifestyle: Appreciation, the catalyst for happy marriage

Couple Happy1Marriage is the most difficult work you could ever do in your life. A husband is traditionally expected to be the leader, protector and provider while the woman is expected to be the homemaker.

Then the couples have to harmonise their roles in handling issues like children, friends, money work and in laws. Soon everything looks routine and partners are tempted to take each other for granted.

If the man gives ‘chop money’ he is expected to do it and if a wife cooks it is her duty.

Many Ghanaian husbands take for granted the critical roles wives play in physical, emotional, mental, social and sexual fulfilment.

The Ghanaian wife is a dietician, dishwasher, housekeeper, housemaid and does the laundry.

She is sometimes the teacher, gardener, seamstress and repairer. Above all, she has to keep constant close watch over her family to ensure their welfare. Soon it is nightfall. Another call to duty. A baby cries and the husband who is nearer the baby wakes her up to go and attend to her child.

She is a working machine. Yet, this woman but for the interstate law stood a high chance of being sent away empty handed if her husband passed away.

It is important to remind ourselves each day that everyone needs appreciation in relationships to feel his or her efforts are acknowledged and not taken for granted.

Appreciation makes one feel valued and important, special, cherished and loved. You are motivated to give more to your lover who in turn is empowered to give back to you more love and attention.

Importance of appreciation

When both partners show appreciation to each other, great things happen. Your mood improves. Good times, good memories and joy become a common place in your relationship.

Disappointments, tension and rage become less and less frequent. You never make divorce or separation an option.

A sense of gratitude is, therefore, one of the most effective ways in enriching a relationship. On the other hand nothing good comes into a relationship without appreciation.

If you do not show appreciation to your lover, you are tempted to focus on your lover’s weaknesses and what goes wrong in the relationship.

Small issues get blown up on your mind and the temptation to give up is strong. Lack of appreciation is, therefore, the fastest way to kill your relationship.

No doubt studies show many relationships fail for lack of appreciation.

How to show appreciation

Show appreciation by your kind words. Simple words like ‘thank you, I love you, you have been so good to me and I am happy I found you, ‘ have profound positive effect on our lovers.

Words have psychic energy. Your kind words bless your lover who in turn reacts more kindly to you.

• Verbalise your appreciation. Tell your friends and relatives how good your lover has been to you. He or she will hear it and do more for you.

Write very often to your lover to thank him or her for everything he or she does for you. Choose your words carefully and wisely but mean what you say.

You may add some cartoons and romantic songs. By writing out your feelings you inspire yourself and your lover.

• Hug and touch often. These simple acts stimulate the production of chemicals that stimulate bonding, Physical touch is an asset for calming anxiety, transferring courage and reassurance.

A tender touch communicates loving messages more than words can do

Send gifts often even when it is not for a special occasion. Gifts are signs of love and goodwill. They expel hurts and anger.

When you give you see each other as valuable, worthwhile and good and enhance your lovers personal worth.

Giving, therefore, increases your intimacy because if you give your lover feels loved accepted and valued.

Let your gifts be regular, simple and spontaneous especially things your lover considers intimate and memorable. They do not have to be expensive. It is the idea that is important.

• Celebrate your marriage. Go out often. Invite friends and relations for a meal or drink. Studies show that relationships celebrated often grow in health.

Appreciation, the heart of relationship

Your relationship is the best agent in enriching your life. Take time and show your lover, who makes your life richer, how much you appreciate everything he or she does for you.

Happy lovers always have a sense of appreciation. Appreciation warms your heart to love. It warms your lover’s heart to be loved and to give you more lover.

Without it your heart will be too cold to love. Appreciation, therefore, warms your heart to give and receive love.

A catalyst is any substance that alters the rate of a chemical reaction. This means a catalyst may slow down the rate of a chemical reaction or hasten it.

In marriage also we have ‘substances’ that alter the rate of happiness in marriage. ‘Substances’ like selfishness, dishonesty, criticism, immorality, inequality and intolerance may slow down your happiness in marriage.

On the other hand ‘substances’ like unconditional love, respect, companionship, support, forgiving spirit and appreciation will hasten happiness in marriage.

One good thing about appreciation is that like a catalyst you don’t need big things from your lover to show it. In fact, little things are the big things.

The smile, tender touch, hug romantic moments you share are the important agents for happiness. Therefore don’t look for big things from your lover to show appreciation. Each day find something good that your lover does and show your appreciation for what he or she does. If you see your lover as good you will find many things he or she does as good.

Each day find something good that your lover does and show your appreciation for what he or she does. If you see your lover as good you will find many things he or she does as good.

Show appreciation to your lover for all the small and big things he or she does because appreciation leads to other virtues which make you commit more to each other and nurture your marriage.

You will be happier in your marriage and keep it healthy, fit and alive just by showing appreciation. Do this everyday to enjoy the beauty of love

Youth must see agriculture as lucrative venture — John Mahama

John Mahama Batakari 1Former President John Dramani?Mahama has challenged African leaders to present agriculture to the youth as a lucrative venture. He said that if agriculture was properly packaged to the youth they would fully embrace it as a business venture.

At the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group's Annual General Meeting for 2017 in Ahmedabad, India, last Monday, the former President cautioned: "If we do not in good time fashion out effective, sustainable programmes for these vibrant, creative young people to work, we could be having a major social problem on our hands, a potentially explosive situation with dire consequences reaching beyond Africa."

He spoke on the topic, "Agriculture is cool: Engaging Africa’s youth.

Ghana's example

Outlining the steps Ghana had taken to make agriculture attractive to the youth, Mr Mahama said the strategies were achieving results.

"In Ghana, we have employed various strategies in addressing first the lack of interest in agriculture while gradually eradicating barriers to success by young people in this sector.

"First, we started the Youth in Agriculture Programme, a platform for young people graduating from our colleges to work on our state farms and learn modern techniques such as the use of greenhouses, the production of local or exotic crops and other modern techniques.

"This, we believed will, and has actually enabled these young graduates to learn a few more skills, generate interest that will get them, in the long run, to choose agriculture as a means of providing an income and becoming successful individuals," he said.

He said with the programme assuming a rebranded form, expectations were that a lot more youth would be supported to increase participation and sustain the interest of the youth.

Learn from mistakes

Mr Mahama said his government made a mistake in giving out tractors to farmers at subsidised prices and hope lessons would be learned from it.

He said his government thought giving out the tractors to the farmers was one best way of modernising and mechanising agriculture.

“It was a mistake and people should learn from our mistake. Farmers do not need the tractors and the planters. What they need are the services of the equipment.

"We found out that the farmers cannot maintain the tractors and do not have the know-how to manage the tractors and keep them running. In two, three years, brand-new tractors provided break down and are standing on stones," he stated.

The former President said it was to correct the problem, that in the twilight of his government, the farmer services centre concept was introduced to take charge of the maintenance of the equipment.

“I hope the new government will continue with that programme so that farmers can receive service when they need it," he added.

AfDB commended

Mr Mahama stated that he had met a number of promising young farmers, in and outside Ghana, and from his interactions with them, their businesses were thriving.

Mr Mahama commended the AfDB for making increased agricultural productivity in Africa one of its priorities.

He stressed the need for African governments to enhance collaboration with the bank as the continental nations made agriculture an integral part of national policy and planning.

Let Ramadan make a positive impact on you – Bawumia’s message to Muslims

Bawa Imam MayThe Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has wished all Muslims a “joyful Ramadan”.

The Vice President in a statement before the start of the month-long Islamic ritual said “Ramadan is a period of great sacrifice, patient endurance, and gratitude. It inspires in us the common values and experiences we share as human beings.”

Dr. Bawumia’s message took on a markedly compassionate tone as his statement noted the “acts of charity and meditation” that define the holy month.” Below is the full statement of Bawumia’s message:

I would like to extend my warmest felicitations to the Muslim Ummah in Ghana and around the globe on the occasion of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

An occasion which heralds the twenty-nine day period of fasting when Muslims are expected to exercise self-restraint.

Ramadan is a period of great sacrifice, patient endurance, and gratitude. It inspires in us the common values and experiences we share as human beings. The rich and powerful go through the experience that the hungry and weak go through so that they develop empathy for weak and hungry and gratitude for the bountiful blessings of God.

As we mark this auspicious month, may we all (Muslims as well as Christians), rededicate ourselves to the universal human values of love, humility, empathy for others and thankfulness for the blessings of God.

Let us pray for our dear country Ghana. I wish you a blessed month. May Allah’s peace be upon us all.

Ramadan Mubarak!

Corruption has “weakened” Ghanaian Football – Kwabena Yeboah bemoans

Kwabena Yeboah Swag AwardsAce sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah has bemoaned the high rate at which corruption is gaining prominence in Ghanaian football

Speaking at the 42nd edition of the annual Sports Writers Association of Ghana Awards, Mr. Yeboah who is also President of the association expressed worry over how football in the country has been saddled with corruption lately.

According to him, the canker has reduced the integrity of football in the country and needs to be looked at urgently.

He charged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to confront the issue with all seriousness rather than resorting to the ostrich-like approach in an effort to resolve it.

He cited the recent ban imposed on highly rated Ghanaian referee, Joseph Lamptey by FIFA to corroborate his assertion that corruption in Ghana football is reaching its peak.

"Our football is badly weakened by corruption. The corruption is a result of greed and irresponsibility on the part some and also our collective failure in confronting the canker. Bribery is becoming a nerve-centre of this beautiful sport which is sad to relate".

"FIFA’s ban of one our referees on acts that borders on pure dirt should awaken us. GFA cannot continue to play the ostrich particularly as the Ghana Premier League reaches the second round”, Kwabena Yeboah lamented.

The 42nd SWAG awards night is an annual event organized by SWAG to reward distinguished personalities for their contribution to the development of sports in Ghana. The 2017 edition of SWAG was held on Saturday May 27 at the Banquet Hall, State House in Accra.

Shatta Wale crowned King of Ghana Meets Naija 2017

Wale King2After a night of captivating musical performances from a tall list of artistes at this year’s highly anticipated Ghana Meets Naija, dancehall act, Shatta Wale was voted King of the concert.

The six-hour event held at the Accra International Conference Centre, Saturday, saw Shatta Wale and M.anifest ‘face-off’ Nigeria’s Falz, Davido and Tiwa Savage.

Themed around an election, the artistes, before the show were voted for in a special text-in exercise that saw a commissioner in the person of female rapper Eno, crown the eventual winner.

Shatta Wale is the only Ghanaian artiste to perform on the Ghana Meets Naija stage five times in a row.

On the night, the self-acclaimed Dancehall King as usual, connected well with the crowd as he performed his popular hits including Dancehall King, Bie Gya, Chop Kiss, Reality, Ayoo, Hosanna, Low Tempo and Taking Over.

With an enviable audience appeal, there were instances where the audience literally chanted his name and sang along even when he took a break.

Midway through his performance, Shatta Wale expressed gratitude to Empire Entertainment, organisers of the event for engaging his services adding, that the firm has earned his respect.

“I’m happy to be on this platform every year. Bola Ray and Empire Entertainment pay me very well. I really like money,” he said.

Over the years, Ghana Meets Naija has been known as the platform for the biggest artistes in both Ghana and Nigeria to share one stage and thrill music lovers.

It has always seen massive patronage because of the list of top African acts it parades.

Lilwin performs with Akrobeto at Ghana Meets Naija 2017

Liwin Akrobeto 3Arguably one of the best performances on the night, actor cum artiste, Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin together with his colleague, Akrobeto were a delight to watch at this year’s Ghana Meets Naija musical concert.

It could be said as a remarkable comeback after his infamous ‘wee’ drama at Ghana Meets Naija three years ago which almost cost him endorsement deals.

Lilwin determined to erase the scar, joined forces with Akrobeto and other dancers to thrill patrons some of whom were on their feet from the moment the artiste mounted the stage till his exit.

Prior to the show, he had indicated in an interview with Showbiz that his act on the night would be without drama as he would perform his popular songs and exit the stage quietly but will ensure he leaves a mark.

“I don’t want to have any issues again so I have decided not to do any surprise act this year. The unfortunate situation three years ago nearly cost me the relationship I have with MTN.

“This year, I am going to engage my fans by performing songs such as Mama Boss Papa, Kooko, Does I Care and other songs I am yet to release”, he told Showbiz in an interview on Tuesday.

“I want Ghanaians to know the other side of me. It is rare to combine music and acting and I am blessed with both and I am successful in the two so on May 27, Ghanaians will have a feel of me which they will love very much”, he noted.

With a well-rehearsed performance, Lilwin actually took the audience by surprise.

Chelsea and Conte's problems ahead of next season laid bare at Wembley

Chelsea ChallengeStern tests await Chelsea next season with their manager now needing fresh blood and fresh ideas to carry the fight on multiple fronts

The double has proven one step too far for Chelsea. Diego Costa’s late equaliser gave the Premier League champions momentary hope in the season’s finale at Wembley but it was not enough to mask a bad day at the office. You would expect to see Chelsea wrest a contest like this from the grip of a team they were fancied to beat but they couldn’t do it here. That spoke volumes.

Their hopes were extinguished when Alexis Sanchez initially found Olivier Giroud with a quick through ball. Aaron Ramsey slipped the wrong side of Ngolo Kante and from there Arsenal’s record 13th FA Cup title was secure.

At times like this it is not difficult to see the issues Chelsea are going to have next season – both as title holders with other top class sides chasing them down –and fighting on an added front in the Champions League.

No one would accuse an Antonio Conte team of complacency but this was a game in which they were so unlike their usual selves. They should have been three down by half time. They were caught only seconds after levelling.

Arsenal sprung no surprise in matching up to Chelsea’s system. What was unexpected though is that Arsene Wenger’s side outfought and outthought Chelsea pretty much from the first whistle to last. And this was with depleted numbers. Kieran Gibbs was ruled out late yesterday while the rest of the backline was patched up due to the absences of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny.

Chelsea don’t have many days like this – if they did then they wouldn’t have won so many games in the league this season – but their uncharacteristic sloppiness cost them a second trophy in Conte’s debut campaign.

Arsenal were ahead as early as the fourth minute when Alexis Sanchez fired home amid the controversy surrounding Aaron Ramsey’s offside position.

But ignore that. Rewind the tape and look at Diego Costa causing Kante to stumble as Chelsea attempt to clear from the initial chance.

Conte has drilled his players to perfection all season long and their breakouts tend to follow a familiar pattern. There was a malfunction, however, and they paid the price once Alexis finished across Thibaut Courtois.

Costa was probably Chelsea’s worst player in the first half. He was temperamental – clashing early with Rob Holding – and his body language suggested he was going to do something silly.

He improved, however, and kept his head on a day when Victor Moses lost his in getting red carded for diving.

Aaron Ramsey Arsenal Chelsea FA Cup final Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Arsenal Chelsea FA Cup final

Whatever happens with Costa – whether he stays or goes – Chelsea need a high-class centre forward capable of challenging for a first-team slot. Likewise, pressure will need to be exerted on Chelsea's top men lest they grow comfortable.

They are the most-predictable team in the league but that has been generally a strength rather than a weakness given their relentless success in league play.

But Conte’s preferred close-knit group of 13 will simply be insufficient to fight on all fronts next term. Nemanja Matic was exposed at Wembley and comfortably beaten in the midfield battle by Granit Xhaka. The centre sector of the pitch was the Wild West at times but only the Swiss seemed able to tame it.

When opposition teams have opted to man-mark Chelsea around the pitch it has taken a force of will to carry them through.

They didn’t get that here - not from Pedro, not from Eden Hazard - against an inspired Arsenal. These players were fighting for their manager and delivered Arsene Wenger a performance that restored the Frenchman some of the dignity his history merits.

Opposite him Antonio Conte’s challenge was laid bare. He must do more than cross his arms when his team are outmatched next season. New players and new thoughts are going to have to emerge over what is expected to be a full-on summer.

Messi family joins Copa celebrations

Messi Family JoyThe Barcelona star finally got his hands on silverware after a frustrating end to the season, and his loved ones were there to share in the moment

As family album photos go, Saturday's snap of the Messi family celebrating Lionel and Barcelona's Copa del Rey triumph is definitely up there with the best.

Neymar equals Puskas' record

The Argentine was on target for his club as they downed Alaves 3-1 to take the trophy for the third successive season.

And while another Copa may feel like scant consolation after falling short in La Liga and the Champions League this campaign, Messi was delighted to celebrate his triumph with those closest to him.

Messi had first spoken with team-mate and compatriot Javier Mascherano, checking up on his compatriot's health after a nasty clash of heads forced him out of the game early on.

Once assured of his friend's wellbeing, fiancee Antonella Rocuzzo and sons Thiago and Mateo joined Messi on the pitch at Vicente Calderon after the final whistle to share in the special moment.

A touching moment for sure, and one we are certain Messi would like to see repeated at the end of 2018's Champions League final - or even at the final whistle of the World Cup!

First batch of pilgrims to depart from Ghana on August 10

Hajj Pilgrims3The first batch of Muslim pilgrims performing this year’s holy exercise (Hajj) in the Muslim Republic of Saudi Arabia will leave Ghana on August 10, 2017.

According to arrangements made by the National Hajj Board, a total of 6 flights are supposed to be flying directly from Tamale airport in the Northern Region to the Holy land.

Chairman of the National Hajj Board, Sheikh I.C Quaye who visited the Northern Region last week to access facilities ahead of the planned airlifting of passengers, said it has become imperative to increase the number of flights due to the numbers involved.

“In recognition of the Muslims here, we are increasing it [the flights] to six”.

While promising an incident free Hajj this year, he also hinted of plans to relocate hajj village to the Tamale Sports Stadium to ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims.

The erstwhile John Dramani Mahama government upgraded the airport to the status of an international airport after the expansion project and organised the first hajj flights to fly directly from Tamale to Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during last year’s pilgrimage.

A total of four (40 flights carried the over 500 pilgrims from Tamale directly to Jeddah.

NCA scandal revealing 'high stupidity' – Franklin Cudjoe

Franklin Cudjoe Imani BossThe President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, had scathing words for former officials for the National Communication’s Authority (NCA) following the claim that surveillance equipment meant to have been procured and installed with about $8 million of the taxpayers’ money was lying in some of their garages.

Mr. Cudjoe described such a move as the highest order of stupidity on The Big Issue, whilst being mindful that he was commenting on mere claims.

“It is the highest form of stupidity. I am using these expressions because I couldn’t understand how someone could actually be part of a deal to pay millions to some spy agency and then be given some gadgets he believes is actually a listening and then he hands over the gadget and dumps it away in the garage. That’s the stupidity.”

“To think that you spent millions to procure a gadget that the person who eventually handed over that gadget into a reclusive area like a garage probably didn’t understand what he was getting into. You can’t make this stuff up,” Mr. Cudjoe said.

The allegations

The claim the equipment was lying garages was made by George Oppong, a Ghanaian whose company’ Infraloks Development Limited (IDL) has been indicted in the scandal that has hit the NCA over the purchase of the eavesdropping equipment.

George Oppong had been accused of conniving with three former officials in the Mahama administration, Eugene Baffoe-Bonnie, former Board Chairman of the NCA; William Tevie, former Chief Executive Officer of the NCA; and Alhaji Osman, a former Deputy National Security Coordinator to drain the state of $4 million through the purchase of the equipment for national security.

But Mr. Oppong in the statement denied conniving with the said officials to syphon state money, maintaining that his contract was genuine.

In the broader picture, the NCA officials allegedly withdrew $4 million from the accounts of the NCA which they failed to account for.

The NCA officials had contracted an Israeli company, NSO Group Technology Limited, to supply listening equipment at the cost of $6 million, to enable National Security monitor conversations of persons suspected to be engaged in terror activities.

Infraloks Development Limited, was also charging $2 million to facilitate the transaction, bringing the total sum to $8 million.

Keep an eye on Boards

Mr. Cudjoe also said this scandal reminded that some of these boards were also capable major financial malfeasances and not just politicians.

“The powerful nature of certain boards unknown to the powers that be. That is how come the people who make money in this town are not really the politicians but board members of state entities because they can take decisions that are as useless, as costly and as stupid as this one.”

NDC government neglected Accra Sports Stadium - Sports Minister

Asiamah SwagThe Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah has blamed the erstwhile Mills and Mahama administrations for the poor state of the nation’s biggest sports facility, Accra Sports Stadium.

According to him, the stadium is in its current state of abyss because it was neglected for nine years. He hinted that the NDC administrations of late President Mills and ex-President John Mahama abandon the stadium reason why it is in a deplorable state.

He made these remarks at the 42nd edition of the MTN SWAG Awards held at the Banquet Hall of the State House.

He however said that unlike the previous administration, the Nana Addo led government is committed to sports and will ‘fix’ the stadium that is deteriorating at an alarming space.

The legislator for the Atwima Mponua constituency revealed that plans are already underway to renovate the stadium that was given a facelift in 2007 ahead of the 2008 AFCON.

“The over nine years has seen the stadium in this deplorable state but we are going to fix it. Already I (Isaac Asiamah) have received a structural audit of the stadium and we are going to undertake the renovations in faces".

I’m already in touch with stakeholders to close down the part of the stadium that could potentially cause havoc. We will also do face-lifting on the pitch”.

Tony Baffoe went home with the most prestigious award of the evening, the SWAG Sports Personality of the year award whiles TP Mazembe winger Solomon Asante won the SWAG Footballer of the year accolade.
