Akufo-Addo's 8th address: Some essential points to note

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-AddoSince Ghana recorded its first two cases of the novel Coronavirus, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been engaging Ghanaians through a regular recorded televised broadcast on measures his government has outlined to combat the spread of the virus.

On his eighth broadcast to the nation on Sunday [April 26, 2020], Akufo-Addo presented to the people of Ghana some major decisions he has taken after consultations and meetings with the Council of State and some key stakeholders.

1. Maintaining existing measures and extending the ban on public gatherings

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated in his address that by Executive Instrument (EI 64), he has extended the suspension of all public and social gatherings for another two weeks effective today [Monday, April 27, 2020] whilst maintaining other existing measures “until we have a firm grip on the movement of the virus.”

This, he said, is supported by data and science.

2. Ghanaians must stop aiding foreigners into the country illegally

President Akufo-Addo noted that some unpatriotic Ghanaians are aiding some West African nationals to enter the country illegally despite the closure of Ghana’s borders due to the virus.

He said, this attitude is more disturbing as several of the West Africans, who have been arrested, have later tested positive for the virus.

“These are unpatriotic acts, and must stop. We cannot continue to allow a few persons, who are motivated by their own selfish, money-making interests, to endanger the lives of the rest of the population. Not only will persons who enter our country illegally be strictly dealt with, but so will Ghanaians who facilitate their entry. As I have said before, being a Ghanaian must mean that we look out for each other,” he said.

3. Coronavirus has exposed the deficiencies of our healthcare system

The president hinted that the outbreak of the novel virus has exposed some deficiencies in the health sector of the country.

He subsequently announced plans by his government to construct some hospitals in some 88 districts in the country without hospitals.

He continued, “we have six (6) new regions without regional hospitals; we do not have 5 infectious disease control centres dotted across the country; and we do not have enough testing and isolation centres for diseases like COVD-19. We must do something urgently about this. That is why Government has decided to undertake a major investment in our healthcare infrastructure, the largest in our history. We will, this year, begin constructing eighty-eight (88) hospitals in the districts without hospitals.”

He explained that 10 of the hospitals will be in the Ashanti Region, nine in Volta and Central Regions, eight in Eastern Region, seven in Greater Accra and Upper East Regions, five in Northern, Oti, Upper West, and Bono Regions, four Western North and Western Regions, three in Ahafo and Savannah Regions, as well as two in Bono East, and North East Regions.

4. Muslims must stay at home and pray

President Akufo-Addo appealed passionately to Muslims to stay at home and pray during throughout the period of Ramadan, something the Holy Prophet Muhammed has been advocating for any time there was heavy rain.

“Muslim scholars agree that ‘rain’ represented danger, and, therefore, the prescription for Muslims to stay at home and pray in times of heavy rain is applicable to all life-threatening situations. I, thus, call on all Muslims to heed this prophetic admonishment to pray at home, so we can protect ourselves from the danger of Covid-19. This is in line with the counsel of the wise, devout Muslim scholar, the Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu. I wish all Muslims Ramadan Mubarak,” he said.

5. Govt makes strides in PPEs for health workers

The president indicated that the government has enabled significant domestic production and supply of protective equipment (PPEs) to health workers as they wage war on COVID-19.

“They have received, in recent days, nine hundred and five thousand, and thirty-one (905,031) nose masks, thirty one thousand, six hundred and thirty (31,630) medical scrubs, thirty one thousand, four hundred and seventy-two (31,472) gowns, forty-six thousand, eight hundred and seventy (46,870) head covers, and eighty-three thousand, five hundred (83,500) N-95 face masks,” he said.

6. Coronavirus fight will be a long war for Ghana

Akufo-Addo as part of his address said Ghana remains in unchartered territory in its fight against the novel Coronavirus.

“We are still very much in unchartered territory, and, clearly, we still have some way to go towards ridding ourselves of the virus. The truth is that this will be a long war, broken up into several battles,” the president acknowledged.

7. Compulsory wearing of face masks

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said face masks are now mandatory for every Ghanaian to wear. This is part of the measures taken if Ghana wants to win the war against COVID-19.

He said some guidelines have been issued by the Health Minister which is to guide the general public on the production and mandatory wearing of the face masks.

“We should all familiarise ourselves with them, and apply them, as the Regional Co-ordinating Councils of the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central Regions are demanding of their residents,” he added.

8. Akufo-Addo asks Ghanaians to support him defeat COVID-19

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has asked Ghanaians to continue to rally behind him to defeat the Coronavirus pandemic.

“This is the time for sacrifice, so that we do not have to bear a greater cost in the future,” he stated.

Today in History: Kwame Nkrumah dies in Bucharest in 1972

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President
Exactly 48 years ago, on April 27, 1972, Kwame Nkrumah, the deposed President of Ghana and a great Pan-Africanist died in Bucharest, Romania after six years in exile in Guinea far away from his birthplace of Nkroful at the age of 62.

Kwame Nkrumah played a pivotal role in the formation of the African Union (A.U) previously called the Organization of African Unity (O.A.U) and led his country to independence in 1957.

President Kwame Nkrumah was unconstitutionally ousted from office through a military coup. The Coup was launched by the National Liberation council (NLC) with the code name “Operation Cold Chop,” on February 24, 1966 whiles he was in Peking (today’s Beijing) en route to the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, with plans to end the American war in Vietnam.

Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Conakry, Guinea after being invited by Sekou Toure just after the Military Coup that unconstitutionally ousted his Government from Power.

In distant Bucharest (Romania), April 27, 1972, far from his green and lovely native land and from his own people, Kwame Nkrumah died of cancer.

His death, of cancer, was announced by President Seim Toure of Guinea, one of the militant nationalist’s closest friends. Mr. Nkrumah had been living in Guinea since his overthrow in a military coup in 1966.

Several African Heads of State and the representatives of 25 other countries paid their last tributes to Ghana’s former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on Saturday, May 13, 1972 after a funeral ceremony in Conakry, the Guinean capital.

Also represented at the funeral ceremony was Ghana’s new ruling military body, the National Redemption Council. But in Accra, there was no word of when Dr. Nkrumah’s body would be flown back for burial — and there were some misgivings that it would not be returned by the Guineans.

The return of his body to Ghana followed lengthy negotiations between Ghana’s military rulers and the government of Guinea. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was buried at his home town of Nkroful, 240 on Sunday 9 July, 1972. While the tomb still remains in Nkroful, his remains were transferred to a large national memorial tomb and park in Accra, Ghana.

Today, the place is known as Kwame Nkrumah’s Mausoleum and has become a tourist destination for Ghanaians and those in the diaspora.

The idea of erecting a monument in honour of Nkrumah dates back to 1972, when the African Students Union sent a memorandum asking the Government of Guinea, then under President Sekou Toure, to send the mortal remains of the Ghanaian leader to Ghana only if the military leaders at that time denounced coup d’état and re-erected the statue of Nkrumah which was destroyed during the 1966 coup.

Although the remains were later returned to Nkroful, his birthplace, it was not until 1992, that the image of Nkrumah was restored on the Old Polo Grounds during which the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), decided to build the Kwame NKrumah Mausoleum.

Six (6) Reasons Nigerians should visit Ghana

       Nigerians should visit Ghana.
The West African countries of Ghana and Nigeria have an ongoing rivalry between them akin to that of siblings. From football, to politics, to entertainment, citizens of each country always want to demonstrate their superiority over the other, howbeit not in a hateful or biased manner. It is always more bants than facts. There have been several episodes, of ‘social media wars’ or ‘Twitter Fights’ between citizens of both countries that leaves us all clutching our stomach with laughter. Through it all though, it is obvious that it is all love and sport.

In this post, we attempt to give reasons why Nigerians, despite the rivalry with their Ghanian counterparts, should visit the Gold Coast. Just like Nigeria, Ghana is rich in history, mineral resources, culture, tradition and places of interest to see and visit.

Many Nigerians do not even know that in Ghana you have Hausa and Fulani speaking people like there are in Nigeria.

 Cousins
Ghanians are like cousins to Nigerians. Visiting Ghana for a Nigerian is like visiting your cousins for holiday. There are lots you share in common, but somehow you all still do things differently. Case in point, the jollof. When Nigerians visit Ghana there is an air of familiarity about the place, some lingo and slangs are commonly used, but their pidgin is still very confusing.

Food
Shitor. Banku. Waakye. Jollof. The list is endless really. Ghanian cuisine can be a joy to experience and even though the eternal battle over whose jollof is better still rages on, no Nigerian should visit Ghana without tasting the jollof. Ghanaian food is actually so popular in Nigeria that there are bukas and restaurants in Lagos dedicated to selling just Ghanaian meals. The most popular among them is Ghana High.

Shatta Wale
Shatta Wale is Ghana’s biggest music sensation at the moment. And only recently he has had a war of words with Nigerian pop artistes on social media. As long as you are not one to take these things too seriously, visiting Ghana to see a Shatta Wale show should be on your list of things to do, at least that way you can see what the hype is about yourself and tell if he is as great as he says he really is.

Beaches
Ghana is blessed with such an impressive stretch of beach line. If you are tired of the Elegushi and Oniru beaches of Lagos, switch it up by exploring the coastline of Labadi and Kobrobite. If you are enthusiastic about wildlife, visit the Cocoloco beach where you would find turtles and a large number of river birds. Beach Resorts in Ghana are beautiful and spending a night or more in one of them would greatly enrich your Ghana experience. Hospitality in Ghana is amazing with big establishments and accra hotels offering top notch service to travelers.

Charle Wote
We have Calabar Carnival. They have Charle Wote. This annual street cum art festival does get bigger and better every year with amazing exhibitions, musical performances, art installations, food,  merchandise vendors as well as live music and dance that goes on well into the night. For anyone who enjoys having a good time, when in Ghana, Charle Wote is a must attend.

Nigerian Community
There is a perpetually growing Nigerian community in Ghana and visiting Ghana would definitely feel like home. It wont be long before you notice the familiar accent of a Nigerian, no matter where he is from back home and quickly tag them as your brother or your sister. Especially in Ghanian Universities where many Nigerians turn to as an alternative to schooling.

I could have been a starter at Real Madrid or Man Utd for 10 years - Kevin-Prince Boateng

I could have been a starter at Real Madrid or Man Utd for 10 years - Kevin-Prince Boateng

KevinPrince
Kevin-Prince Boateng is now a La Liga title winner with Barcelona, but he feels he could have “played 10 years for Real Madrid or Manchester United” had his attitude been better early in his career.

At 32 years of age, the former Ghana international has reached the very top of the game.

He has enjoyed plenty of success to this point, turning out for the likes of Tottenham and AC Milan, but admits that he should have achieved so much more.

Boateng told Goal and DAZN of his professional drive: “The head is crucial. I started too late to really think about stuff. Of course I regret that.

“As an 18-year-old, I would have needed an agent or a family to push me in the right direction. I would have liked that. But I had to fix everything myself.

“I know very well that I have also failed with my will, which has not always been 100 per cent there.

“If I would have had the absolute will, I would have been a starting XI player at Barcelona or would have played 10 years for Real Madrid or Manchester United.”

Boateng has never been short of admirers despite not always pushing himself as hard as he could.

Jurgen Klopp is among those to have cast admiring glances in his direction, with the current Liverpool boss having been keen on retaining an enigmatic talent following a short-term loan at Borussia Dortmund in 2009.

On a failed transfer, Boateng said: “BVB missed only one goal at the time for European Cup qualification. Had Dortmund qualified for Europe at the time, they would have bought me.

“Klopp called me personally and told me that it did not work out. I was very sad about that and the normally always tough Prince cried.

“At the time, I guessed that something big could happen in Dortmund, so I wanted to stay. But it wasn't meant to happen.”

Boateng added on Klopp – a manager he holds in the highest regard: “He knows exactly what he has to say to make you go to the square and die for him. He has this over all others.

“This has been seen in Dortmund and you can see it now in Liverpool.

“It even gives the players who do not play the feeling that they are important. With him as a coach there is a special feeling.”

Pressed further on what would have happened had the German tactician wanted to take him to Liverpool, Boateng said: “For Klopp I would even have gone to China!”

Such a switch is now unlikely, with Boateng waiting to discover whether Barcelona will be triggering the purchase option in his current loan agreement at Camp Nou.

The Catalan heavyweights have the chance to acquire him on a permanent basis from Sassuolo for €8 million (£7m/$9m)
