Six (6) Reasons Nigerians should visit Ghana

       Nigerians should visit Ghana.
The West African countries of Ghana and Nigeria have an ongoing rivalry between them akin to that of siblings. From football, to politics, to entertainment, citizens of each country always want to demonstrate their superiority over the other, howbeit not in a hateful or biased manner. It is always more bants than facts. There have been several episodes, of ‘social media wars’ or ‘Twitter Fights’ between citizens of both countries that leaves us all clutching our stomach with laughter. Through it all though, it is obvious that it is all love and sport.

In this post, we attempt to give reasons why Nigerians, despite the rivalry with their Ghanian counterparts, should visit the Gold Coast. Just like Nigeria, Ghana is rich in history, mineral resources, culture, tradition and places of interest to see and visit.

Many Nigerians do not even know that in Ghana you have Hausa and Fulani speaking people like there are in Nigeria.

 Cousins
Ghanians are like cousins to Nigerians. Visiting Ghana for a Nigerian is like visiting your cousins for holiday. There are lots you share in common, but somehow you all still do things differently. Case in point, the jollof. When Nigerians visit Ghana there is an air of familiarity about the place, some lingo and slangs are commonly used, but their pidgin is still very confusing.

Food
Shitor. Banku. Waakye. Jollof. The list is endless really. Ghanian cuisine can be a joy to experience and even though the eternal battle over whose jollof is better still rages on, no Nigerian should visit Ghana without tasting the jollof. Ghanaian food is actually so popular in Nigeria that there are bukas and restaurants in Lagos dedicated to selling just Ghanaian meals. The most popular among them is Ghana High.

Shatta Wale
Shatta Wale is Ghana’s biggest music sensation at the moment. And only recently he has had a war of words with Nigerian pop artistes on social media. As long as you are not one to take these things too seriously, visiting Ghana to see a Shatta Wale show should be on your list of things to do, at least that way you can see what the hype is about yourself and tell if he is as great as he says he really is.

Beaches
Ghana is blessed with such an impressive stretch of beach line. If you are tired of the Elegushi and Oniru beaches of Lagos, switch it up by exploring the coastline of Labadi and Kobrobite. If you are enthusiastic about wildlife, visit the Cocoloco beach where you would find turtles and a large number of river birds. Beach Resorts in Ghana are beautiful and spending a night or more in one of them would greatly enrich your Ghana experience. Hospitality in Ghana is amazing with big establishments and accra hotels offering top notch service to travelers.

Charle Wote
We have Calabar Carnival. They have Charle Wote. This annual street cum art festival does get bigger and better every year with amazing exhibitions, musical performances, art installations, food,  merchandise vendors as well as live music and dance that goes on well into the night. For anyone who enjoys having a good time, when in Ghana, Charle Wote is a must attend.

Nigerian Community
There is a perpetually growing Nigerian community in Ghana and visiting Ghana would definitely feel like home. It wont be long before you notice the familiar accent of a Nigerian, no matter where he is from back home and quickly tag them as your brother or your sister. Especially in Ghanian Universities where many Nigerians turn to as an alternative to schooling.

I could have been a starter at Real Madrid or Man Utd for 10 years - Kevin-Prince Boateng

I could have been a starter at Real Madrid or Man Utd for 10 years - Kevin-Prince Boateng

KevinPrince
Kevin-Prince Boateng is now a La Liga title winner with Barcelona, but he feels he could have “played 10 years for Real Madrid or Manchester United” had his attitude been better early in his career.

At 32 years of age, the former Ghana international has reached the very top of the game.

He has enjoyed plenty of success to this point, turning out for the likes of Tottenham and AC Milan, but admits that he should have achieved so much more.

Boateng told Goal and DAZN of his professional drive: “The head is crucial. I started too late to really think about stuff. Of course I regret that.

“As an 18-year-old, I would have needed an agent or a family to push me in the right direction. I would have liked that. But I had to fix everything myself.

“I know very well that I have also failed with my will, which has not always been 100 per cent there.

“If I would have had the absolute will, I would have been a starting XI player at Barcelona or would have played 10 years for Real Madrid or Manchester United.”

Boateng has never been short of admirers despite not always pushing himself as hard as he could.

Jurgen Klopp is among those to have cast admiring glances in his direction, with the current Liverpool boss having been keen on retaining an enigmatic talent following a short-term loan at Borussia Dortmund in 2009.

On a failed transfer, Boateng said: “BVB missed only one goal at the time for European Cup qualification. Had Dortmund qualified for Europe at the time, they would have bought me.

“Klopp called me personally and told me that it did not work out. I was very sad about that and the normally always tough Prince cried.

“At the time, I guessed that something big could happen in Dortmund, so I wanted to stay. But it wasn't meant to happen.”

Boateng added on Klopp – a manager he holds in the highest regard: “He knows exactly what he has to say to make you go to the square and die for him. He has this over all others.

“This has been seen in Dortmund and you can see it now in Liverpool.

“It even gives the players who do not play the feeling that they are important. With him as a coach there is a special feeling.”

Pressed further on what would have happened had the German tactician wanted to take him to Liverpool, Boateng said: “For Klopp I would even have gone to China!”

Such a switch is now unlikely, with Boateng waiting to discover whether Barcelona will be triggering the purchase option in his current loan agreement at Camp Nou.

The Catalan heavyweights have the chance to acquire him on a permanent basis from Sassuolo for €8 million (£7m/$9m)

Ghana international Rahim Ayew was on target for FC Europa in the Gibraltar Telecom Rock Cup quarter finals as they humiliated Bruno Magpies by nine goals to one.

Ayew started the game on the right wing and was instrumental as FC Europa cruised to a 3-0 lead in the first half.
The Ghanaian netted his club’s 4th goal early in the second half after going on a run down the right flank before making way for Manu Dimas with ten minutes to full time.

Ghanaian-born German winger Razak Iddrisu was also a second half substitute for FC Europa.

Ghana and Barcelona midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng is set to return to Sassuolo at the end of his loan deal with Barcelona according to reports and has a contract with the Italian club which runs till 2020.

The 32-year old joined Barcelona in January but has only made two appearances for the Spanish giants in all competitions.
Boateng has not been picked by Valverde in Barca’s last three matches in the la liga but was surprisingly named in the Champions League against Lyon on Wednesday.

According to Gazzetta di Modena Boateng’s contract is unlikely to be extended and he will return to the Italian club in the summer when his loan deal expires.

Akufo-Addo begins legislation to deal with Vigilantism

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo AddoSITPresident Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has instructed the Attorney General to begin the process to lay before Parliament legislation to deal with the vigilantism menace in the country.

The President made the announcement in his reaction to the second letter from the NDC chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo over the party’s reservation to the approach in dealing with the menace as suggested by the President.

The President who had directed the NDC and NPP to deal with the menace during his state of the nation address also stressed that he would begin legislation to handle the problem if the parties failed to do so.

Charlotte Osei's dismissal in U.S. human rights report

Charlotte Osei Ghanas EC BossFormer EC boss, Charlotte Osei
The sacking of a Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Osei as well as the country’s undesirable prison conditions and attacks on journalists have been captured in the 2019 Human Rights Report by the United States of America.

The report, which was presented to the U.S. Secretary of State. Michael R. Pompeo. said: "The June ouster of the electoral commission chairperson and the president’s subsequent stacking of the Electoral Commission with persons considered to be biased in favour of the ruling party raised questions about whether the body might be used to stifle voter registration among the opposition’s base."

Touching on the conditions in the country’s prisons, the report indicated that as of September 2018, Ghana's prisons held 14, 985 inmates, though they are designed to hold 9,875. “This has exacerbated the harsh conditions leading to overcrowding, food shortages, a poor sanitary environment and lack of medical care.”

The report also decried the cases of attacks on journalists.

On the back of the report, the Minority in Parliament, in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ranking Member, Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, is demanding a “sincere and determined action” on the report.

Below is the full minority's statement:

MINORITY DEMANDS SINCERE AND DETERMINED ACTION ON 2019 US HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT

The Minority in Ghana's Parliament in fulfilling our constitutional mandate and living up to the requirements of a conscientious and responsible opposition followed keenly the release of the 2019 Human Rights Report by the United States of America.

The Report which was presented in Washington, DC yesterday the 13th of March, 2019 by US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo must be of interest to us all as we strive to entrench good governance and the respect for fundamental human rights as contained in Chapter 5 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The Minority agrees with Secretary Pompeo that "by articulating abuses and pressuring noncompliant regimes, we can affect change." It is our expectation though that this shared responsibility would be pursued through objective mechanisms without bias and prejudice as we all work towards the construction of a fair and just world.

Despite the fact that this report covers some 200 countries, we shall highlight the following issues as raised specifically in the Ghana country report:

1) The July 2018 tragic police killing of 7 Asawase Zongo youth near Kumasi:

As we know, the Akufo-Addo administration-initiated investigations following public outcry which proved that there was no evidence that the young men were armed robbers as initially claimed by the police and for which the victim's families have now been compensated; the perpetrators have not yet been brought to justice.

The Minority urges Government to act expeditiously to secure justice in this matter.

We also appeal to Government to pay attention to several cases of police brutality, corruption, negligence and impunity as documented in the report with the view to eliminating this combined canker and preserving the good image of Ghana.

2) Harsh and life-threatening Prison Conditions:

The report indicates that as of September 2018, Ghana's prisons held 14, 985 in prisons designed to hold 9,875. This has exacerbated harsh conditions leading to overcrowding, food shortages, a poor sanitary environment and lack of medical care.
30 prisoners reportedly died as at September 2018 because of these circumstances.

The Minority calls on Government to continue with former President Mahama's programme of prison reforms which included the expansion of facilities, without any further delay.

3) Violence and harassment against journalists:

It is worrying that the report highlights 17 cases of attacks on journalists. The incident of the Joy FM reporter Latif Idrissu who sustained fractures to his skull when he was brutalized at the Police Headquarters is also documented as the report decries a lack of update from Government.

The government must be seen bringing perpetrators of violence against journalists to book. It is troubling to note that this trend of intolerance and hatred for journalists who expose wrongdoing in this Government is getting worse as Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Manasseh Azuri Awuni become the latest victims. At this rate, we shudder to imagine what would be contained in the 2020 Human Rights Report.

It is noteworthy that the NPP MP who exposed the identity of the assassinated undercover journalist receives inglorious mention in the report.

4) Vigilante Groups:

The Ghana country report, in what must be unnerving, places the spotlight on: "post-election violence, including takeovers of government institutions by vigilante groups associated with the victorious New Patriotic Party."

The Minority hereby reiterates its call on the need to disband all vigilante/party militias NOW. President Akufo-Addo must lead from the front and not from the back as he has been seeking to do by asking party executives to dialogue.
5) Dismissal of Charlotte Osei:

The report states unequivocally: "The June ouster of the electoral commission chairperson and the president’s subsequent stacking of the Electoral Commission with persons considered to be biased in favour of the ruling party raised questions about whether the body might be used to stifle voter registration among the opposition’s base."

Clearly, it ought to now dawn on President Akufo-Addo and the new EC Commissioners that the United States and the international community is watching them keenly and that indeed they know what they may be up to.

It is also obvious that the world has taken note of the unfair treatment meted out to Charlotte Osei in satisfying pre-election open threats by some leading members of the NPP and therefore in the process setting a bad precedent.

6) Corruption and Lack of Transparency in Government:

A verbatim extract from the report - "The law provides criminal penalties for corruption by government officials, but the government did not implement the law effectively, and officials frequently engaged in corrupt practices with impunity. There were numerous reports of government corruption during the year. Corruption was present in all branches of government, according to media and NGOs, and various reputable national and international surveys, such as the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators and Afrobarometre, highlighted the prevalence of corruption in the country."

It is the Minority's hope that the infamous penchant of President Akufo-Addo acting as a clearing agent will now give way to a sincere determined effort at fighting corruption seeing that the world is highly unimpressed with his hollow rhetoric about fighting the menace.

7) Other Matters of Concern:

"Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting was significantly higher in the Upper East Region with a prevalence rate of 27.8 per cent, compared with the national rate of 3.8 per cent."
"Early and forced child marriage, while illegal, remained a problem, with 34 per cent of girls living in the three northern regions of the country marrying before the age of 18. Through September the CHRAJ had received 18 cases of early or forced marriage."

"Children as young as four years old were subjected to forced labour in the agriculture, fishing, and mining industries, including informal gold mines, and as domestic labourers, porters, hawkers, and quarry workers. One child protection and welfare NGO estimated that 100,000 children were trapped in forced child labour, almost one-half of whom worked in the Volta Region where, in the fishing industry, they engaged in hazardous work, such as diving into deep waters to untangle fishing nets caught on submerged tree roots. The government does not legally recognise working underwater as a form of hazardous work."

These three frightening predicaments ought to be a scar on our collective conscience.

We must all come together and do everything in our power to reverse this scourge. The Minority intends to partner Government and intensify our constituency specific interventions to bring an end to this unacceptable plight confronting our children.

In conclusion, the Minority hopes that the 2019 US Human Rights Report would raise the needed awareness, trigger the necessary discussions which must ultimately lead to concrete actions aimed at securing for ourselves a far improved climate of respect for fundamental human rights and social justice.

Signed,

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Danso's lone strike for Black Meteors sinks Academy Boys

Danso's lone strike for Black Meteors sinks Academy Boys
Black Meteors NwBlack Meteors will host Gabon on March
Ghana’s U23 side the Black Meteors pipped Awudu Isaka Soccer Academy at the Presec School Park in Accra in a preparatory game on Saturday.

A solitary strike from former U17 striker Richard Danso was enough to give Ibrahim Tanko and his boys victory.

A well-organised Awudu Isaka side held the Ghana U23 side to a goalless first half in a game that was balanced.

The first chance of the game fell to Medeama striker Awudu Tahiru but his thunderous strike went straight into the upright leaving the academy boys gasping.
Elvis Kyei Baffour intelligently connected to a beautiful pass from Montari Kamaheni but his shot was blocked by the Awudu Isaka Soccer Academy goalkeeper.

The game remained barren until the break but the Ghana U23 side made several changes to their side, given them renewed energy for the second half.

Richard Danso stole the show with a 25-yard thunderous strike in the 65th minute to register the only goal of the game to separate the two sides.

The Ghana U23 side are preparing for the U23 AFCON Qualifier with Gabon slatted for the 23rd of this month after beating Togo 5-2 on aggregate.

I bring you greetings from Team Wahab

I bring you greetings from Team Wahab.
............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The time has come again when students of this noble Union, (TONSU) shall elect students to lead them in various positions. Having studied the trend of politics on Toende, knowing that students are at most times taken for granted and knowing I have what it takes to make a change, I Abdul-wahab, offer myself to be elected TONSU President for the 2019-2020 year.

A leader can be thought of as a person with the capacity to define him/her self to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future. Whoever is providing leadership needs to be fresh and thoughtful and reflective as possible to make the best fight, this best defines me if you study issues and vote devoid of intimidation, gerrymandering, victimization, gender, tribalism, nepotism, religious affiliations, ethnicity, sectionalism, and many other things that influence our choices negatively in African leadership. We need to move from that.

I,Abdul-Wahab Akolbilla Sumaila, offering myself to be elected TONSU President for the 2019-2020 year has titled my campaign GIVING CHANGE A CHANCE. This means I bring change to the student leadership of Toende Students Union (TONSU) and hope for the future and I start first by making my grievances public well ahead of voting day so you can know what my leadership brings to the table.

v A leadership that will change the way of doing things.
v A leadership that will focus much on the basic needs of students.
v A leadership that will involve others in finding solutions to problems
Thank you in advance.

#Team Wahab
#For the many, not the few
#One people, one empire, one leader
#Honour the vote
#Sustaining the quality of TONSU through integrity, honesty and experience
#Your voice our concern
