I don't regret playing Hazard as false 9 - Conte

Eden Hazard MotmAntonio Conte has no regrets over his use of Eden Hazard, despite the forward's interview in which he seemed to criticise his role as a false 9.

Hazard said "we didn't play to our strengths" after he failed to get a shot away as Chelsea were dominated in a 1-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Chelsea have now lost four of their past five Premier League games and, although Conte is likely to use Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud against Crystal Palace, he defended his decision to put Hazard up front.

"If I think it's right for the team to play this way, it's OK," Conte said at Cobham Training Centre. "Otherwise I can take another decision and play with a striker. Maybe I can take different decisions. There are three players for two places. One has to go on the bench. Then I have to decide who has to go on the bench.

"For sure, [Giroud] is ready. He has specific characteristics, Olivier. He's a strong player and has a lot of physicalities. I think that, in some games, it's right to start with him. In other games, it's right to start with Morata.

"In others, it's right to continue with Hazard as a No.9. Olivier, he played against West Brom from the start, and played against Hull, and then came on in every game, I think. But he's ready to play. But I repeat, I don't like to speak to the press what happens with one player, with two players, with the team.

Conte emphasized it is his job to make those decisions and deal with any issues that may arise with the players as a result in private, rather than trading barbs in the press.

"I like to talk with the players face to face, or in meetings with all the players," he added.

Conte also spoke on the criticism of the tactics themselves, highlighting that they were similar to the strategy used against Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

While the Blues boss did not deny improvement is needed against that type of opposition, he emphasized while his side lost the game against City, the result may not have reflected the effectiveness of his defense against the league leaders' potent attack.

"The tactics were the same against Barcelona," Conte said. "Defensively, we were very good in both games. If you look at the stats, we conceded only two shots to Manchester City: one they scored, and another after a free-kick and [Cesar Azpilicueta] saved it on the line. I don't see a lot of shots on goal from Manchester City, and this is very strange.

"Usually when you play against Manchester City they shoot about 20 or 25 times every game. For sure, compare that with the Barcelona game, I think we were not so good in ball possession. We missed a lot of last passes. And, for sure, we have to improve.

"We have to improve in personality, especially when there is a lot of pressure from our opponent. But the tactics were the same against Barcelona and, against Barcelona, I didn't hear anyone complaining. But, I repeat, we have to improve. We have to improve, especially with the ball."

Conte may opt to use Hazard as a false 9 again at the Camp Nou after he performed in the role more successfully in the first leg against Barcelona.

Going back to Hazard would make him a bit different than Marcelo Lippi at Juventus, who Conte recalls took a different tact when, as a player, the Chelsea boss criticised Lippi's use of him on the pitch.

"We played a game, a massive game against Parma when they were first and we were second," Conte said. "We won 3-1. After the game, there was an international break.

"During the international break [I gave] an interview. The journalists asked me if I was happy with the team and with this important win. My stupid answer was, 'We are winning, but I'm not happy because I'm not enjoying the role the coach decided to give me.'

"When I came back to Turin, it was a meeting with Lippi and all the players and he killed me. He killed me in a bad way, not in a soft way, in front of the players.

"After training, the club called me. They killed me another time and gave me a big, big fine. And then, in the next game, I didn't play. I was on the bench against Piacenza. He told me it was a lack of respect for my team-mates, first of all, and then for him, the club and the fans.

"He killed me. But I took this experience to heart and, after that, I improved a lot. Not to be selfish. I started to think about the team. I became a captain of the team after that."

Conte cautioned he and Hazard are not in the same spot but indicated it allowed him to understand the Belgian international's mindset over a frustrating outing.

Article continues below "You can check. That's in the past. This is a funny story," he said. "No, I think there are different situations [between me at Juventus and Hazard]. I don't think this is the same situation. When we are players, the risk of making a lot of mistakes, it's enormous. It's big.

"The players, it's normal... When I was a player, until one point in my career, I was selfish. Because you think about yourself if you play. If you don't play, you're unhappy. You don't think about the team. When you arrive at that point in your career, though, you start to have your mind more open, to be less selfish, and to start to think for the benefit and best of the team, and not only for yourself.

"I'm talking about my experience — not the others. This is the best way. I'm saying that I was selfish at one point in my career, and then I became a team player with my mind."

Alexis Sanchez: Manchester United not getting best from forward - Jose Mourinho

Alexis Sanchez Manchester United are not getting the best out of Alexis Sanchez, says manager Jose Mourinho.

Chile international Sanchez, 29, joined in January from Arsenal on a four-and-half-year contract in a swap deal with midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But the forward has scored only once in eight appearances since arriving at Old Trafford.

"He is learning how to play with us and we are learning how to get the best out of him," said Mourinho.

The difficulties of integrating a player midway through the season mean Mourinho is not a fan of the January transfer market.

"What is wrong is that he came at the worst moment of the season, in the winter market," the Portuguese said.

"That's why I don't like the winter market very much. I think [signing Sanchez] was a chance that we didn't want to lose and we made it, but we don't believe a lot in the winter market.

"For sure next season will be better for him."

Some pundits have suggested that incorporating Sanchez into United's attacking framework has caused problems elsewhere and notably affected the form of Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese boss dismisses that idea though.

"That's something that we can develop and we're going to develop with time, with experience and living these experiences together," Mourinho said.

"I don't consider that a weakness, I consider that a huge potential to be developed."

Despite Sanchez's lack of goals, Mourinho has been pleased with the effort the former Barcelona forward is putting in to get things right.

"That's great," Mourinho added. "[He is] not afraid to take responsibilities, not afraid to try to make things happen. When he feels that he's not as dangerous as he likes to be, he drops back, he tries things.

"When he makes mistakes he tries to compensate immediately with fantastic spirit, with a great transition to try and win back the ball. We are very happy."

Amidu, Anas in ‘secret’ collaboration to turn heat on corrupt looters

Martin Amidu AnasMultiple award-winning investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has revealed he has met and spoken to Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor, Martin A.B.K. Amidu, and they intend to collaborate in the fight against the canker of corruption in Ghana.

In the over 20 minutes interview aired on Aljazeera monitored closely by MyNewsGh.com, Anas Aremeyaw Anas expressed high optimism about the appointment and eventual confirmation of “Uncle Martin”-as he affectionately called Mr Amidu throughout the interview- as Special Prosecutor.

Anas also made reference to the comments by Mr. Martin Amidu during his vetting about working together with him (Anas) in the fight against the scourge of corruption in Ghana.

Speaking exclusively to Aljazeera News, Anas Aremeyaw Anas revealed he has since spoken to Mr Martin Amidu; they have sat down to look at “their differences” and “their books”, with the conclusion being one- trouble for corrupt people in Ghana.

“… You have Uncle Martin sitting on that seat and I am collaborating with him, then there is really going to be heated on those corrupt officials in Ghana”, Anas said.

Responding to a question about the formerly strained relationship he had with his ‘Uncle’ Martin Amidu, Anas pointed to Mr Martin Amidu’s comments about him during his vetting, to show they have moved on, affirming that the fight against corruption is an important uniting factor for which reason corrupt officials should begin to fear for what is coming their way.

“I mean we have spoken, We have looked at our differences, we have looked at our books and I can only assure the skeptics- those corrupt people in Ghana- that if it is about the two of us, we will definitely get together to ensure that the bad guys go to jail”, the ace investigative journalist said.

“When he [Martin Amidu] was being vetted you would hear what he said about me. The good thing about the two of us is that we all fight against corruption. We basically do the same thing. And we have sat down and looked at our books and I should warn people in Ghana, the corrupt officials…”, he added.

The respected journalist defended the line of work he has chosen – undercover investigative journalism with three focus; to name, to shame and to jail corrupt officials, but added that he welcome criticism at all times.

He said he was in the know about how different the African terrain is from the US or the UK for which reason his style may not fit those countries; but knowing how difficult corruption makes life for ordinary people in Ghana’s rural communities for example, people who can’t have water or decent food because someone diverted their fair share of the national cake, Anas said it inspired him to name, shame and jail corrupt officials in Africa.

“I have chosen to name, shame and jail. I know that it may not work in the US or the UK. The UK is not my village. I know my village. I know that they don’t have pipe water. I know that they don’t have decent food. So if I pick a story in my village, I ensure that that bad guy who is taking my people’s food goes to jail. It may not work in the U.S. or UK. But it works in Africa.” He said.

“I think it is fair to criticize. The type of journalism I practice, I’ve tried and tested it and it works. The type of work I do fits my settings. I’m a product of my society.”, he said.

“My work has been challenged on many grounds and it stood the test of judicial scrutiny.”, he added.

I am prepared to work with Anas

Mr Martin Amidu had earlier said he is prepared to work with ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and other anti-corruption campaigners as the Special Prosecutor when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

“I’m prepared to work with anyone who will help us achieve the objective of the Office,” the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice told the Committee when he appeared before it.

“You need to fight crime with those who want to fight crime and are genuine about it, you can’t do it alone,” he added.

Background

In an article in 2015, then citizen vigilante Mr. Amidu who is now Special Prosecutor alleged that investigative journalist Anas had been compromised.

Mr. Amidu alleged that it was the late President John Atta Mills who recruited Anas to collaborate with select security personnel to undertake the judicial corruption investigation which exposed monumental bribery and corruption in the judiciary, involving over 180 workers and 34 judges.

But journalist Anas Amereyaw Anas, after dismissing those allegations, with Mr Amidu persisting, and further back and forth, extended a hand of open collaboration to the former Attorney General Martin Amidu if he so desires. Anas said he wouldn’t mind working with Mr Amidu despite their differences.

“I am ready to work with him; maybe we can do something together. I don’t mind working with him at all,” Anas said in 2015 on JoyFM.

He said in spite of Mr. Amidu’s attacks on his work, especially his investigations into corruption in the country’s judiciary, his doors are open for collaboration between the two in fighting corruption in Ghana.

Back together again

With dialogue and collaboration between ace investigative journalist Anas and ‘Uncle Martin’ who is now Special Prosecutor, the only people who should have cause to worry right now are corrupt public officials, both past and present.

AC Milan 0 Arsenal 2: Mkhitaryan's first goal lifts Gunners gloom

Arsenal Players AcArsenal seized control of their Europa League last-16 tie with AC Milan courtesy of a 2-0 win at San Siro on Thursday, easing the pressure on Arsene Wenger.

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, his first for the club, and Aaron Ramsey were enough to give the Gunners a valuable first-leg advantage and bring an end to their four-game losing run.

Questions over the future of manager Wenger had dominated the pre-match talk, but the 68-year-old will have been delighted with a clinical and disciplined display from his players against a Milan side who had gone 13 games without defeat.

Mkhitaryan played a key role in Manchester United's triumph in last season's tournament and he continued his fine form in continental competition with the opening goal 15 minutes in.

Milan struggled to turn their possession into meaningful chances and they were punished again seconds before the interval, when Ramsey beat the offside trap to score his seventh goal of the season.

Gennaro Gattuso's men fought hard in the second half but were comfortably kept at arm's length by the visitors, leaving them with a significant task to come at the Emirates Stadium next week.

Milan spurned two good openings in the first 10 minutes, with Giacomo Bonaventura just missing a cross at the left-hand post and Patrick Cutrone firing into the side-netting after escaping Shkodran Mustafi.

Hakan Calhanoglu perhaps could have won a penalty had he decided to go to ground after beating David Ospina to the ball, and Gattuso must have wished he had when the Gunners broke the deadlock.

Mkhitaryan, collecting Mesut Ozil's pass, turned past Davide Calabria and sent a shot off the boot of Leonardo Bonucci and into the net, with Gianluigi Donnarumma wrong-footed in goal.

It was the first goal Milan had conceded in 599 minutes and they should really have been punished further, with Danny Welbeck shooting straight at Donnarumma one-on-one and Mkhitaryan clipping the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

But on the brink of half-time, Arsenal did score a second. Ozil played a fine pass into Ramsey's path and the Wales midfielder rounded Donnarumma for an easy finish.

Milan ended the first half without a shot on target and they nearly started the second by gifting Arsenal another goal, with Donnarumma doing just enough to deny Welbeck after Franck Kessie wildly kicked the ball into the striker's path.

Gattuso introduced Nikola Kalinic and Andre Silva to bolster Milan's limp attack, but speculative efforts from Bonaventura and Kessie were about the best the home side could muster, allowing Arsenal to head back to London with a solid lead and a major boost in confidence.

AS Monaco interested in Kwadwo Asamoah

Kwadwo Asamoah YellowFrench club AS Monaco could be the next destination for Ghanaian and Juventus midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah according to French tabloids Le10 sport and Mercato 365.

Asamoah may leave Juventus on a free this June if his contract is not renewed by the Serie A giants.

The midfielder has not had a smooth few years at the club as he has been struck by series of injuries.

AS Monaco sold left-back Benjamin Mendy to Manchester City and the departure of left-back Thomas Lemar looks inevitable.

Kwadwo Asamoah who has played as a left wing-back for much of his time at Juventus looks the ideal replacement for these players at Monaco.

He was an inspirational substitute last Wednesday as he helped Juventus to come from a goal down to win 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspurs in the Champions League round of 16.

The versatile player after their Champions League victory over Spurs revealed his intention of staying at Juventus.

''I have never had any problems with anyone, I just want to work, I have never talked about my contract because I do not want any distractions. This team has helped me win important things and it has given me everything," Kwadwo Asamoah told the media.

Kwadwo Asamaoh last played for the Black Stars at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
His six-year stay at Juventus looks to be coming to an end as he has been linked with several other clubs including Galatasaray, Inter Milan and Roma.
